Final Project Guidelines

Your assignment: Write a short story that features two of the characters we have read this summer as pro- (or an-) -tagonists.  Choose one major character from any of the fictional* books we have read and one major character from Divergent.  The two characters that you select will meet one another in one of the following scenarios (your choice):

·      Parking lot collision: Your unwitting protagonists—who are also, as it turns out, poor drivers—have collided in a mall parking lot.  Whose fault was it?  What was each character doing there in the first place?  How does each character react to the accident?  Does anyone lose his or her temper?  How do the characters resolve the situation?

·      Reality show challenge: Your characters have paired up to compete in the latest hit reality show, “Literary America’s Got Talent,” a talent show featuring characters from classic literature.  What kind of act do your characters assemble?  Against whom do they compete?  Do they win?  Are there any snags along the way?

·      Your own scenario: See me if you have an idea for another scenario that you would like to pursue.

Once you have decided on the characters and scenario you will work with, fill out a “Character Development Sheet” for each of your characters.  Then, begin drafting and revising your story.  The final draft of your story should meet the following requirements:

·      It must be typed and double-spaced with 1” margins on all sides.
·      It must include your name and a title.
·      It must be 2-3 pages long.
·      It must be stapled.
·      It must be free of grammar, spelling and style errors.

You may, if you would like, include an illustration to accompany your story.

The final draft of your story will be due in class on Friday, August 12th. Plan to read a portion of your story aloud in class.

* See me if you would like to use Levitt & Dubner or Atul Gawande as a character.
