Elite Book Camp
Summer 2011
Welcome! This summer we will read some excellent books, gain valuable reading and writing skills, and prepare for the PSAT. To get the most out of this class, you should arrive every day bearing the following rules in mind:
1. Be responsible. Treat this class as you would a class at your regular school: keep up with the reading, complete all assignments on time, and participate actively and thoughtfully in reading and discussion.
2. Be prepared. Arrive at class on time, and make sure to bring all necessary materials. Each day, you’ll need to bring your book, a pen or pencil, a spiral notebook, and your Elite binder with course materials.
3. Be respectful. Be polite to your teacher, to your classmates, and to the authors we read.
HOMEWORK
You will have homework for this class every night. There are two standing assignments:
- Read. Your syllabus contains a provisional reading schedule; check the blog for any revisions to that schedule. There will be periodic reading quizzes. The questions for these quizzes can be found in your Elite reading packets.
- Study vocabulary. There will be daily vocabulary quizzes covering the words in your Elite reading packets. You are expected to learn 125 new words each week. Each quiz will cover 5 words randomly selected from the current week’s vocabulary.
Any additional homework assignments will be posted on the course blog.
GRADING
You will receive a letter grade for each unit (book) we complete, as well as a final, cumulative grade for the summer. Letter grades are based on a standard percentage scale (90-100% = A, 80-89% = B, etc.). I assign points as follows:
Participation: 5 points / day
Homework: 5 points / assignment (unless otherwise specified)
Quizzes: 5 points / quiz
